Middle School Students to Write Their Own Songs In New School Residency Program

11/30/15 - MIAMI BEACH – Fienberg-Fisher Middle School students will learn to write their own songs when The alt Default, a band comprised of three New World Symphony Fellows, teams up with the school’s rock ensemble for an innovative afterschool residency. A portion of the funding for the Collaborative Song-Writing Residency comes from a matching challenge grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, as part of its Knight Arts Challenge.  The matching funds will be raised through a Kickstarter Campaign. The alt Default is comprised of Nathaniel Wolkstein (violin, guitar, and vocals), Hannah Nicholas (viola and vocals), and David Connor (acoustic and electric bass).

“This project provides an opportunity for a creative outlet for our talented students that would never be available to them otherwise,” Mary Murphy, assistant principal of Fienberg-Fisher K-8 Center, said.

A dozen workshops will explore each step of the song writing process, including composition, writing lyrics, performance, and recording.  Ten to 15 students will participate in the after-school program, which will emphasize modes of creative expression. The five-month residency will culminate in May with three free concerts in which students will play alongside their mentors. The students will also make professional quality recordings of their songs, using recording equipment that will be purchased and donated to the school at the end of the residency.

“For today’s musicians, the expectation of artistic excellence is a given. They also need to learn to engage people off and on the stage, to become part of the fabric of their communities. The alt Default project is a perfect example of musicians sharing their talent and enthusiasm for the art form in innovative ways with the next generation of artists.” said Victoria Rogers, vice president for arts at Knight Foundation.
